Editing: Finishing Up the Project

Image
Finally, the project is finished.  Last blog, I talked about the filming process.  Now that we have all the content we need, we were finally able to put it together.  The editing process was harder and longer than anticipated.  We had to be very thorough to make it the way we wanted.  First, we started off by putting all the clips and scenes we had filmed together in a google drive folder.  The folder ended up with about 50 clips!  We didn't include all of these clips in the final project, but we thought it would be a good idea to shoot extra takes incase some of them did not come out as good as we hoped.  Giving us more to work with proved beneficial.  The one who did the actual editing was my partner, Nicholas.  I watched him do it and helped give him ideas for it.  The initial draft came out to much more than two minutes.  But, with enough work, we were able to compress it to 2 minutes in a way that made sense.  I...

Filming: Shooting the Rest of the Project

Image
Today, my partner and I as well as our actors went to the park to film the project.  There was a lot we needed to film and, therefore, a lot to talk about.  The biggest dilemma we faced was that we wanted to film some of our scenes during the daylight and some of our scenes as the sun set.  So, in order to include everything, we all got there early at around 3:15.  First, Nicholas and drove around the park and reaffirmed our plans and shooting locations.  Then, after that, our actors came and we put up the tent we would.  At the last minute, I decided to bring a couple lawn chairs to make the campsite have more features.  After the campsite was set up, we started filming.  The first parts we filmed were the establishing shots of the car driving.  The shots were mostly still shots or pans that followed the car as it drove in front of a bland, rural-looking background.  We hoped the background would give away how secluded the forest ...

Production: Planning the Filming Day

Image
We spent a long time planning the filming.  We put a lot of thought into the sounds, props, and location we would use.  We put the most thought into the filming part of the project.  Specifically, the way each scene would look and be filmed.  Now, we have spoken with our actors and have planned the filming day.  My partner, Nicholas, and I live relatively close.  This means we can meet at the park with ease.  However, our actors live farther away.  Their drive to the park will be much longer.  Since they are only helping us act, it wouldn't be fair to make them commute the whole way.  Instead, we decided to meet at a fast food restaurant that's closer to both of us.  At the restaurant, we might get something to eat.  Either way, we would then take him to the park from there to film.  We would probably meet up at 2:30pm or 3:00 pm.  This is because I would like to get to the park before the filming begins.  ...

Production: The First Scene

Image
In my last blogs, I discussed the plans my partner an I had for filming the different scenes.  I mentioned how the first scene would be the most technically complicated one.  But, I neglected to mention it is the only one we could do in our homes.  So, since it didn't require any major coordination, w e decided that the first scene could be filmed at a separate time than the rest of the scenes because of its location. Not only that, this was filmed on a separate date. So, we changed the script to compensate for this. The camping trip was scheduled for a later date rather than later that day in the story to maintain continuity. All group members and cast members were not together for this shoot, as we didn't need to be. There are no group parts in this scene besides ones that will be edited in. We got in a voice call together for the audio as the first shot was filmed. There needed to be two phones utilized for this shot, as the shot consisted of a phone on a table. Only p...

Production: Clarifying Scene Plans Part 2

Image
In my last blog, I discussed how my partner and I discussed how we would film so scenes.  I mentioned how we planned out the first scene.  That scene is the one with the phone call.  It is the most technologically complicated scene.  But, we should be able to complete it without problems.  I also described the methods we plan to use for the scene in the woods in which the victim dies.  I mentioned how we would you quick camera shots to make the viewer's heart race.  This scene will be the most difficult to film and edit.  So, it will take the most takes.  However, I did not mention any of the other scenes.  Even though we did discuss them, the first scene and the scary scene were the most complex.  So, I will detail some of the other scenes in this blog.    SCENE 3  There isn't any conversation until the main character is asked to get firewood, and then they agree. This means that in an ideal situation, there wo...
