Music Video Editing Blog

The editing process for our music video was very important to us.  However, since I had most of the filming pieces on my devices, my partner, Nicholas Arnold, did most of the editing.  That being said, i still did help him and we worked together on it to make it the best that we could.

The first step to beginning any editing process is to dump your videos onto a computer to upload to the editing software.  In our project, I uploaded all of the clips to the cloud so Nicholas could access them for editing.  Before the editing, however, Nicholas and I had multiple in-depth discussions on which scenes would be put where and in what order the music video was going to be presented in.  We took all of this into consideration when filming.

Afterwards, Nicholas used editing software to upload all the clips.  In our case, we made more clips than we used so there was a lot of choice during editing.  As aforementioned in previous blogs, the most important shot (the scene with the dog being stolen) was filmed from three different angles.  Because of this, it gave Nicholas a lot of options to make the scene feel dynamic and dramatic.  In the final cut, only two of the three camera angles were chosen.

After Nicholas had uploaded the clips, he got to work putting them together.  By far, the biggest challenge in the creation of our music video was the fact that we had decided our most climatic scene would happen at the point the music track we used peaked.  In our case, that was at 29 seconds.  We planned for the dog to get stolen as soon as the 29 second-mark passed.  The filming helped out in providing the right amount of clips to make this happen, but Nicholas's editing skills are what really made it look good.  Since I wasn't the one editing it, all I could do was watch Nicholas do it and for the time period I was helping him, he spent most of his time getting the timing right.  This included creating a lot of cuts and creating continuity.

After he had edited the video, he sent me a rough draft.  After watching it, I gave some suggestions as to how to improve it and we then worked together to implement them as he edited.
