Music Video Filming Blog

Image
In our previous blog, I sketched up a storyboard to guide my filming for my music video.  I discussed how the song I am using is Boulevard of Broken Dreams and that it is a Grunge song.  The majority of the storyboard sections were used to illustrate establishing shots and the important climax scene where the dog gets stolen.  Before going into filming, I knew the climax scene would be the hardest to film. My role in filming was to be the actor.  Nicholas took up the other roles.  Before the twenty second walking scene, establishing shots had to be filmed.  We filmed shots of the road with and without the actors, the sky, and me walking out of the house with the dog.  The dog used in the blog was a Goldendoodle, not a Labradoodle as I had previously stated.  In preparation for shooting, we took time to scout out a road suitable for the scene.  That meant the road had to have little traffic, long length, and room for camera operators....

Planning Storyboard for my Music Video

Image
These are roughly the 12 "parts" of the music video divided into scenes, all about 5 seconds long each. 1. The video will start with the main character coming out of the front door with his dog on a leash next to him. This will be the instrumental first 4 seconds before the lyrics start. 2. The first scene will cut to a wide shot of the street, panning and following the boy and the dog walking. This second scene will begin right when the lyrics start, and the camera will focus to a shadowy figure in the background. 3. This shadowy figure comes from off screen and grabs the leash from their hands, running away with the dog. They cannot stop this from happening as they are in shock at what happened. 4. This scene is just a zoom in of the main character who mouths "NOOOO" into the sky. At this point the shadowy figure has run off, and it has left him in great despair. 5. The scene fades to a black and white flashback of the dog, doing normal activities such as w...

Research blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
The song we are going to use for our music video is "Boulevard of Broken Dream" by Green Day.  In preparation for the music video filming, we have to plan out the process.  Before planning, however, it is extremely helpful to do research on the type of music video we will be filming.  Before researching music videos, we have to narrow down the type of video because their are many different types of music videos that would provide irrelevant information.  Some genres of music videos include, Indie, Pop, R$B, and hip hop.  The genre of the music video we are using is the grunge genre.   There are many common tropes among music videos involving the grunge genre. After researching music videos from Green Day, I have seen similar themes between them. Most of the video length is usually taken up by the band performing into the camera with their instruments. In between scenes it cuts to the band performing a full on concert, either in an enclosed room ...

Introduction To The Music Video Project

Image
The next big project I will be working on is a Music Video.  I am very excited for this project.  I have seen many music videos in the past and have always admired them.  I feel like I will have a lot of ideas because of that.  In my previous project, I planned, filmed, and edited a commercial for Aleve Liquid Gel Capsules.  I learned many techniques and general ways to make my product better and easier to create during my last project.  For example,  I learned how to edit and it was my first experience acting and filming with a camera for an official assignment.  The techniques I started to develop in my first project will undoubtedly help me greatly in the creation of my music video.   I worked alone on my last project, but I did get some help from my teacher and classmates.  For this project, I am going to work with someone.  The person  am going to work with is Nicholas Arnold.  He is a classmate of mine and...

Aleve Commercial Project Reflection

Image
 1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? My product was the Aleve Commercial that I filmed and edited.  I researched conventions of medicine commercials and Aleve commercials.  A common convention I observed was the presence of a happy environment or scene.  Also, the actors and actresses always had smiling faces unless they felt pain or were facing a dilemma (which was usually caused by pain).  I used this convention in the form of a picnic.  In my opening shot, I had my actors and actresses have a happy picnic with smiles on their faces.   Another common trend I noticed in most medicine commercials was the presence of a clear shot of the bottle of medicine.  Usually at the end of the commercial.  However, in my commercial, I did not include this shot.  This is because in my third scene, the main actress showed and stated the name of the medicine very clearly for the ...

Aleve Liquid Gel Caps Commercial

Image
This is my commercial.  This commercial was my first big project.  I put in a lot of work to complete all of the necessary steps.  I didn't work with a team on it because of online schooling and the Coronavirus.  However, I was still able to complete it on time and without problems.  This is mostly because of help from my family.  My family was very supportive and helpful, especially for the filming process.  They helped me film, brainstorm, and prepare props.  Without them, I would not have been able to make the commercial how I wanted it.   One part of the commercial that I am proud of is the filming.  It only took me only one day to film but, I think that's plenty of time.  It took me multiple takes of each shot.  This was to ensure each shot would look continuous and satisfactory.  Unfortunately, I couldn't act in all the shots.  This was because I had to work alone on the assignment and thought I would do be...

Editing my Aleve Commercial

Image
After the filming, I had to edit all the shots together.  Their were many problems I encountered during editing.  Each one was a learning experience for me.  Luckily, through hard work, I was able to overcome the hardships.  One problem I had when it came to editing my my complete lack of experience.  Before I even thought of a product to advertise, I knew the editing part of the project would be a dilemma since I had no idea how to do it.  This was the biggest problem out of all of them.  However, I was able to overcome it with the help of my teacher and my peers.  My teacher provided a free-to-use and easy-to-use editing software and my classmate helped walk me through dumping and extracting process.  With their help, I was able to effectively compile my commercial's shots into one coherent advertisement with music.  I now confident in my ability to edit in the future. Another problem I encountered during the post-filming process...

Filming My Aleve Commercial

Image
I found the filming process of my commercial to be fun and challenging.  The first shot I had to film for my commercial was the picnic shot.  In it, the actors in it would walk up to a picnic blanket, sit down, and realize an item was missing.  In my storyboard, I included just the boy and woman in the shot.  However, during filming, I thought it would be more dynamic and realistic if another person were there as well.  To solve this, I included my young cousin in the picnic shot.  The picnic scene took a lot of tries to nail. Originally, I had intended include the characters walking into the first shot.  However, after shooting the shot, I discovered it would be too long if we started out of the frame.  The main actor in the commercial was my aunt.  I would have acted in it, but I thought I would do better as the camera operator and director.  The picnic clip was the only one I appeared in.   The next shot was one of the...
